Antithesis and anti-lists

Jun. 1st, 2008 | 10:47 am

Random Rant: I'm sorry, but does anyone else wonder about people who post story ideas that they've had for other people to write? I mean, this isn't like a prompt, which normally contains a great deal of creative room for the author who chooses (or requests) it to move around in, and I just can't imagine any author wanting to do the hard slog without the idea and the direction being almost entirely of their own making. It kind of hurts my brain...

But moving along, things I didn't do this weekend:

  • Write

  • Scanlate

  • Vacuum

  • Garden (it's too cold and rainy for that, though)

  • Go in to work and finish that damn design

  • Get out of my pyjamas (that's on the list for today. Maybe I'll get to it later...)

  • Hang out my washing (Also on today's list. Okay, okay. I'm doing it now, alright? Satisfied?)

  • Write

Where the hell does the time go, anyway?

Recipe - Diabetes approved dessert

Apr. 16th, 2008 | 08:05 pm

This is for [info]trensaddiction and her mum! You'll have to convert the metric to imperial, Trens (I think?), and sort my commentary from the actual instructions.

It's not an uber-sweet pie, as evidenced by the ricotta part, but me and my family found it pretty tasty! Enjoy!

Weekend in review

Apr. 15th, 2008 | 01:33 pm

Four words. One Man Star Wars. Okay, so I'm revealing exactly how much of a geek I am, but it was funny, I tell you! One man, Episodes 4 to 6, 20 minutes each, like the movies on triple play, highlights only. Pretty entertaining just as is, without mime and impression sfx thrown in, but the really delightful moments were oddly all the little side characters no-one ever remembers (unless you've seen the movies 500 times like I have) and the comedian's impersonation of the face-plant death action of that ATAT Snow Walker during the Battle for Hoth (see icon!).

After that, Saturday was spent at the Semi-permanent design conference. Lot of cool people talking about creativity, process and generally just sharing experiences. It was quite inspiring. I really, really need to get myself a decent camera.

Sunday I made lunch for the folks and my Dad's birthday - herb crusted lamb racks with leek and potato and for dessert, baked ricotta and choc-chip pie. It was pretty yummy, and diabetes-friendly for my mum's guilt-free enjoyment.

And today, work is kind of fun. Not that I expect that to last.

The End of Rubens

Feb. 28th, 2008 | 07:37 am
tunes: Hybrid Mix Sessions live on Sirius Boombox Jan08

There's nothing like a doctor to kindly destroy all your self-delusions. "I'm Rubenesque," I thought. "Dress sizes are getting smaller," I decided.

No, says my new gynaecologist. You're in the obese range for you height and you're going to have to lose 5-10 kilos in case we get your ultrasounds back and end up deciding to operate on that cranky little endometrial ovary you have there.

I guess I needed to hear it. And I did say I was going to get myself in shape this year. I just hadn't been thinking 'obese' so much as 'unfit'.

So, anyway, the 15 minute walk to the ferry this morning was nice.

Weirdly, my computer will work with another monitor (so it's not a video card problem), and my monitor will work with another computer (so it's not a monitor problem), but my computer and my monitor won't work together. With each other. Even when I change the VGA cable bewteen them. Maybe they're in the process of filing for a divorce or something? O__o

Ho hum

Feb. 12th, 2008 | 08:27 am
tunes: Hybrid Mix Sessions

Nothing much to tell today. I had a nice weekend, where pedicures ensued and where I felt quite accomplished over little things like cooking corned beef and getting all the housework done. I'm easy to please, I suppose.

I am in the middle of way too many fics at the moment. I am slowly getting my writing mojo back. I think it has a lot to do with the fact that I am a little too tired to really be productive in the evenings, but of course, the only mornings I can spend writing is Friday to Sunday, and those days are often full of other must-do's, and friends calling to go out spur-of-the-moment and what not. Also, I've got this hurty shoulder from poor workspace ergonomics at work, and that really makes you not want to sit at your computer of an evening and write. And of course, there's always unhappy ovary number one, which does not like being cramped into small spaces while I sit folded up at my keyboard.

But you know, other than that, I'm pretty content. I am slowly decluttering my life, trying to say no to procrastination, and hey can anyone tell me; should I go to Hong Kong, Japan or London this year? I really can't decide! Yay for the disposable income ^___^

GBU!

Feb. 1st, 2008 | 11:41 pm

Good
Today my gynaecologist and I decided that we didn't need to remove my ovary! YAAAAAYZ!

Bad
However, I'm still going to have surgery, just less ovary-removing and more Advanced Laparoscopy 101. And even though the surgery I had before was quite minor, and I was unconscious for it at the time, I didn't particularly care for it. Of course, I care for discomfort in the vicinity of my plumbing even less so: stupid Endometriosis 1, Surgery 2.

Ugly
See, it started like this - when I got home from the doctor's I found that my cat had for some inexplicable reason peed in my wardrobe. So I had to drag out all my shoes and the ten ton of books and magazines I had in there in order to clean it up, and then when it was smelling nice and fresh again, I decided I was only going to put the shoes back. Of course, that meant I had to then find a place for the books and mags, which meant I had to clean (read, rearrange) the bookshelf, but then that meant I had to move all my bric-a-brac, which in turn meant I had to clean the duchess which in term meant I had to clean the other cupboard and oh my God I'm caught in a cleaning loop and it's never going to stop is it!!!

GBU - Mundane News

Jan. 20th, 2008 | 09:44 pm

Good: Feeling pretty accomplished this week. I got a few of those little niggly things that I was ignoring at the end of last year out of the way - fixed some overdue Tax stuff, changed my mobile plan to something cheaper (conveniently my old phone died and provided the perfect opportunity), sorted out the growing pile of receipts and papers I had been accumulating and jettisoned some unwanted junk out of my space. I'm feeling quite positive and motivated at the moment, like suddenly I've found the power to say No to Procrastination!

Bad: Back to work tomorrow after around 4 weeks off. No, I realise I don't deserve any sympathy on this one, but.

Ugly: Weirdly, my stabby ovary didn't hurt hardly at all while I was away, but now I'm back, it's stabby again. Did I just not notice it hurting? Did it stop with the stabby because I was more active, swimming and walking all day every day? I just don't know, and I have that app. with my gynaecologist this Friday to tell him if I want it out. I know I said 'hey, why not', but now that decision-time is coming closer, I'm starting to wonder if I can put up with the discomfort a while longer. But then again, if it's only a case of putting off surgery for another 6 months, why not just do it sooner rather than later? Geez, I wish there was a cheat sheet or something to these sorts of things.

Resolution: (noun) 1. the resulting state 2. reduction to a simpler form 3. determination

Jan. 12th, 2008 | 08:36 am

Well, I'm back from my holidays, where I did pretty much nothing except eat (constantly), drink (likewise), sleep in (easily) and swim. Came back tanned, a couple of thousand dollars poorer, and possessed of a renewed appreciation for fortified wines (chilled!) and Winchesters (smoking hot). It can be officially said: I had an awesome time.

NYE went by pretty much like every other night, but I did make some small resolutions - 1. to be more communicative, including updating here a little bit more, regardless of whether there is fic involved, and 2. to balance my newly acquired eating and drinking disorder lifestyle with an effort towards better health. These two things are of course somewhat in opposition - less time in front of the computer and more exercise, vs better communication habits and fine things meant for consumption - but I'm confident I can manage ^__^

So, anyone else make any resolutions? Come on, fess up!

Good: I got an unexpected, unasked for pay rise! ^_____^

Bad: If I want that ovary to quit it with the stabbity stab stab, my doctor says, he's gonna have to take it out. Oh well, not like I've really been using it anyway...

Ugly: I bought a book. It might have been a Stargate Atlantis novel (cough). It's actually not that much better than a lot of ff I've been reading lately, and there's less porn. Actually, hey, there's no porn! I want my money back! (not really)

And in other news, boring-assed work has officially goopified my brain beyond all saving. Donations of working grey matter are now being accepted at a post office near you.
